Righteousness and justice originate with God. Save for God's interaction with His people Israel, the world could not know righteousness and justice. Without God's revelation of Himself to Israel, selfishness and exploitation abound. Bereft of God's revelation of Himself, all of the world embraces idolatry and implodes.
God has chosen Israel, through whom all the nations will see His righteousness and justice. Yes, the world can look at all of creation and see His handiwork, but it is through Israel that His righteousness and truth are displayed to the nations. God has ordained that through Abraham's descendants "all the families of the earth shall be blessed" (Gen. 12:3). The proclamation of the greatness of the God of Israel gives the world hope and pushes back the edges of darkness.
Israel fails in the stewardship given to her. Ten tribes secede from the nation and embrace idolatry. God sends Hosea to announce imminent judgment, but Israel turns a deaf ear. Judah teeters perilously close to the edge of totally embracing the idolatry of the nations around her when Hezekiah steers her back on course.
In Psalm 96 the psalmist rejoices that God's greatness must be proclaimed to all the peoples of the earth. Everyone must hear of Israel's great God:
Israel failed in the stewardship given to her and that stewardship has passed, like the baton in a relay race, to the church. The job isn't complete until all the peoples of the earth hear of His righteousness and truth.
What do Psalms 92, 93, 96, and 97 teach about God and what it means to worship Him?
What does Psalm 94 teach about the righteous and the wicked?
